4Weak Kickstand Splits Down the Middle but Good Phone Protection

By Nylox

I have been using the Otterbox Defender case and holster for a few months. The case will definitely protect your EVO better than most other cases. The screen protector design is fantastic and the case overall is very well made. (Except for the kickstand and holster). The case will definitely protect your phone. It does require occasional removal and cleaning since dust particles still get between the camera lens protector and the screen protector. I work in an industrial environment and this is the best case available at the time of purchase. For any dressy users I would recommend a different case since this thing is big, bulky, heavy, and ugly. But I suppose this is the price you pay for this kind of protection. I can't imagine a much better design for protecting your Evo.

Now for the kickstand issue. I was very unimpressed by the flimsiness of the kickstand. I did my homework before purchasing and noticed that other reviewers mentioned the flimsy feel of the kickstand but I didn't think it would be a big deal if I was careful with it. I was very wrong. I knew the kickstand was flimsy so I always handled it very gently. I only used it for a couple of weeks before I noticed a crack right down the middle of the kickstand where it hinges. Within a week the crack had grown in length and the kickstand just fell off and won't stay on. I know every company makes the occasional lemon and I thought perhaps I just got a "bad one". Wrong again. A lot of people have had the same issue so be warned. I didn't think the kickstand was a big deal but I can tell you that I really missed it when it was gone. Otterbox may have dropped the ball on the kick stand but they definitely stand behind their product and I'm taking the time to edit my initial review just for that reason.

Update 03-22-2011: I will say that Otterbox has definitely taken care of me with my warranty issue. I was surprised at the ease, friendliness, and the quick response I got from them. Thank you Otterbox for standing behind your product. With that kind of excellent service you have kept a customer happy that may have otherwise gone elsewhere over a small issue.

5I am not easily impressed by hype...

By nhuffman

But this thing lives up to it and more. I know a lot of folks with i-phones and they raved about their Otter Box. I am skeptical of anything that seems over-hyped, but decided to give it a shot. In one word this thing is awesome. The clip grips like mad. I've even found the case hanging upside down on one of the velcro straps on my flight suit and it was hanging on without any difficulty. Its easy to get out of the holster. Everything fits very well. The frame, skin and screen protector are bullet proof. I do air and ground patient transport and I am rough on everything. I have dropped the phone in the case, not one issue. If I had one gripe, it would be that sometimes the skin catches on the lock on the top of the case and peels back, and causes the phone to not lock in place. Aside from that this thing is virtually indestructable and worth every penny.

4For those of you on the fence.

I'm not here to say how great or horrible this product is, but rather give an honest review with pros and cons that hopefully help those on the fence. When I first got my Evo I'd ordered Seidio case as I could get different colors in the hard plastic (or what they call hard plastic) covering the rubber piece. I was interested in Otterbox, but highly disappointed that they didn't offer a case that had more color in it. Anyways, after having the case about a month, it fell from my desk, broke a corner off, and thus I decided to go with the less attractive Otterbox, of course if this appeals to you, then it's definitely not a draw back. With that being said, let me give you and overview of the product. When they say screen protector, it is actually part of the case. There are two hard plastic pieces that snap together, the front and back. The front has a screen protector built in, and the back allows opening for the camera (and flash) and speaker. This is part of where the extra bulk people talk about is coming from. for me personally, it doesn't bother me, and as I actually play some games on my phone, the extra bulk actually helps me hold onto the phone more easily. The built in screen protector could be a positive/negative thing. On the one hand, for those of you that are no good at putting screen protectors on (like myself) it saves you a trip to the Sprint store, on the other hand IF you scratch this screen up too much, you are stuck buying a whole new case. Over top of the hard plastic goes a rubber piece. This pieces has flaps that cover all jacks, so when you charge or (if you use your phone as an mp3 player) plug it into an aux. you have to fold the flap up. This is a good feature as it keeps dust and dirt from getting into these jacks, and even protect that small little area from being scratched. The only problem I've had is that I've used a go phone in my car for a good 6 years, and as the attachment piece sticks out a bit, the rubber (being kind of heavy as it is)) pushes down on it, and sometimes pushes it out. That however, is easily fixable by buying a regular car charger, especially since most phones use the same attachment these days. And of course the last piece to talk about is the belt attachment. This comes in handy for anyone who moves around a lot. it is kind of big, but it feels very secure. Two things to keep in mind, make sure you put the phone in the right way, and that the rubber is all the way attached on the sides, otherwise the snap will just fold the rubber piece up. Overall this is a great product, I feel that it is secure, and that the belt clip also serves to protect the screen. The only other issue (as has been mentioned) is the kickstand. it is a plastic pieces that snaps in and out, and as I don't use it a great deal it has yet to break. However it does feel pretty flimsy compared to the one on the phone. With that being said, the case isn't that difficult to take off and on if you want to use the kickstand it comes with. For anyone who want to keep their phone looking new for the duration they have it, I don't think you can beat it, and amazon gives a very affordable price, much cheaper than through sprint, or otterbox.
