Easy to view, butBy Todd
I was looking for an Iphone mount without having something attached to my windshield for my 2001 Mustang. I bought the Arkon SM429-SBH because I liked the flexibility of viewing angles it provided.
I received without instructions, which is no big deal. I got them from their website. The instructions contradicts itself from the picture of the mount itself and the assembly instructions. The bottom support is shown one way in the picture and shown differently in the instructions. The viewing position in my car is just right. The mount held my Iphone with an Otter Box case in padded collapsible side braces with a convenient release button to remove the phone. The mount blocks my climate controls a little but with the distance it is set away from the dash I can still adjust them by reaching under the mount. I can easily change from portrait to landscape. The friction knob at the pivot works good. It has a good range of viewing angles.
The problem with this mount is the bottom support just dosen't cut it. With the mount in place without a phone the vent louvers can be adjusted without a problem. Once you put the phone in the weight pushes the vent louvers all the way down. If the lower support that rests on the dash had more resistance it would support the phone better and allow vent louver adjustment.

iPhone 4 with Otterbox DefenderBy J. Bair
This is a great little vent mount! I needed something to hold my phone when I was driving. There's a little pocket where I can place my phone while driving (Volvo S60) but you can't see the screen. This fit the bill perfectly. The load bearing piece on the bottom lines up great and holds the weight well. Some notes for my specific config:
1. The holder does bounce a bit since it uses the weight of the phone to hold it in place. Though it's not much, it's worth noting. It only really goes *up*. never down. The mount itself grabs on very well in the S60.
2. Pivoting from Portrait to Landscape requires you to pull out on the mount. It's not immediately obvious, but after fiddling around I figured it out.
3. In my specific application (Otterbox case + iPhone 4), the phone is too heavy for landscape. The mount pivots up/down in landscape and left/right in portrait; as a result, when in landscape, the mount just sags down. There isn't enough feedback to hold it up. Not a huge deal, but not optimal.
Due to #3, it gets 4/5 stars. Still, it's a really great mount for my application and works awesome. I use it in Portrait and may just use some super glue to allow landscape viewing (I don't need to adjust the angle at all anyway). Hope this is helpful to others looking at this holder!

Great for Droid XBy Crazyzete
I purchased this product for the Droid X because I have a case over the phone (Seidio Surface/Platinum) and with that it won't fit into the Droid X holder that Verizon sells. This mount does the job. I didn't want anything on the dash or windshield because I have an SUV and it puts the phone too far away from me. This allows me to mount on the vent close to the steering wheel for easy button presses.
I had another vent mount for my Garmin Nuvi and I think the clips on this are more difficult to attach to the vent....it can be done, but it takes a little work. Unlike the one for my Garmin, I would just opt to keep this on all the time because it is a pain to remove and replace. Also, I do agree with other users that the mechanism might not be that durable. Most of the time I do not have the phone in the cradle, and i found that if i keep the jaws open, it makes an annoying rattling sound. I need to keep the jaws closed while empty to not hear that sound. When you press the button to release, it is a spring clip but does sound like it's not going to last forever. Plus, i have to release to insert the phone and release to release the phone now, so that will wear it down a little quicker.
But the bottom line is that I've had it for a few weeks now and it does the job (in my case, holding the phone in place for navigation). It may not do the job forever, but it was fairly cheap. Would I recommend another holder over this one? Possibly, but find one for the Droid X first....This is the only one that I found that does the job and if you are a moderate user looking to use the phone for navigation in the car once in awhile, this will work.
