4Good; Needs Directions; Very nerveracking repair

By Graham

If you have cracked your digitizer (the glass touch-screen that covers the LCD), this item will potentially allow you to repair the phone, as long as you don't mind voiding any warranty you have left and are not completely unable to handle repairs to electronics. I am a beginner, and I successfully used this item to replace the shattered screen.

I would recommend this product, with some caveats.

The repair took me just over 3 hours. I could not find a YouTube video that took me through all the steps. There was one, narrated by gentleman with a deep southern accent, that was most helpful (I'll try to find it again and edit this review, or post a link to the comments).

This repair is about the most intense thing I've ever done with anything electronic. To summarize, you will (1) remove your battery, (2) unscrew the casing (thus voiding your warranty) using the screwdriver provided, (3) unclamp and remove the casing using the plastic tool provided, (4) remove some yellow tape protecting the ribbons on the motherboard, (5) lift the clamps holding the ribbons in place (difficult for me), (6) disconnect the ribbons WITHOUT tearing them (scary/tough), (7) unclamp and remove the motherboard using your fingers, (8) remove the lcd screen*, (9) remove the ribbon that underlies the menu buttons on the old casing (not covered in any video), (10) replace the same ribbon on the new casing (not covered), (11) Remove the speaker at the top** (not covered), (12) replace the same speaker in the new casing (not covered, but easy), (13) remove the old casing, with one ribbon still attached and replace it with the new casing that now has the original ribbon (included, attached) and the menu-button ribbon you've attached yourself, (14) insert the lcd (and screw it in place, if possible*), (15) replace the motherboard using your fingers and generally placing each ribbon as you put the motherboard in*, (16) Reconnect the ribbons and close the clamps (much easier, but still a bit nerveracking), (17) Screw the motherboard back into place using the same screws and the provided screwdrivers, (18) reattach the casing and screw it back into place.

*The video doesn't show this, but makes it clear you can use a good bit of force. I used a lot, trying to bend the casing away from the lcd, even thinking I was bending the lcd itself at times. The screen is lodged in very effectively, and glued to the digitizer, I think. It is tough to remove, but doable. You will likley destroy the tape that holds the back of the LCD to the screws connecting it. If possible, leave that tape in as good a condition as possible, so that when you replace the lcd, you can put the screws back through the same pieces of tape to keep the lcd in place in the new casing. Also, this may seem obvious, but when you put the LCD onto the new digitizer, make sure both surfaces are clear of any debris. I thought it looked clean, but now there is a tiny little follicle about two centimeters at the bottom of my screen. It's not a problem, but it annoys me quite a bit. Still, I'm not going to back in there to remove it. I was lucky enough to take it apart once successfully, not going to risk it again.

**This is not the louder "speakerphone" speaker, but the quieter speaker you'd use when listening at your ear. It is difficult to remove and requires some force. I was often afraid I'd break it, but eventually it came out and could be put in the new casing. It will fall out of the new casing easily, but is held in place pretty well by the lcd and casing.

I recommend also following along with a youtube video. Some of them are clearly made by companies to facilitate sale of these kits. They skip a lot of steps and make it look easy. It was not. I was legitimately surprised when my phone turned back on. It has worked for the last two days with no problem, though, so hopefully I didn't mess anything up.

In the end, this product was good. I wish it came with directions. It also didn't come with the engraving pen as advertised (Shipper was TechStars), but it did come with all the tools I needed (and some I didn't -- e.g. an oversized guitar pick and a rubber hook keychain that might have been for helping to remove the lcd or something... i don't know). I would recommend this, but it's a scary thing to be that far inside your phone and completely on your own. I have no experience with electronics, so I think a beginner could do this with the aid of these directions and a good youtube walkthrough.

5Far superior to buying digitizer alone

By blal

If you are even considering saving some money by buying the digitizer alone, don't do it. The broken one is extremely hard to remove (adhesive), and the two-sided tape, while securing it sufficiently, does not keep out lint. I purchased this after previously repairing with digitizer alone. As far as I can tell this is an OEM original part.

5easy as can be

By ericb1228

Just follow the YouTube guides and you will be fine. just don't forget to Peel off and restick the leds from the old housing to the new housing for the bottom four buttoms. Also, you need to move the headset speaker to the new housing, It seemed to just pry out with a little wiggling for me, just place it in as the contacts for the speaker are on the circuit board.
